Another step in the right direction

Janice Chuba and my sister want to get into business online so I built them a starter site to sell directv and put into a nice little .zip file with instructions about how to set it up and to build sales. I called Cindy this morning about business online. I sent her and DDOnny copy of the files. They need to get set up in a website operation that also has some land-based opportunities.

Most of sites at 741.com are either not in the Google index or are turning up in the Supplemental Index. The Directv routing page is in the primary index. I am going to try and use links from that page and from the blogspot related links to give the other pages (including the new pages at 50megs.com) some backlink support to try and pull them into the primary index.

In the meatime I'm going to try and build a PPC campaign to build sales up. If I can find a well-run PPC program with no fraud it may become my primary source of traffic and sales.

Another Step in the Right Direction

I checked Google before I went to bed this morning. A couple of pages have turned up in the search index. One was an ad that I had placed at FriendCircles.com for RingTones. Apparently Google has crawled Digital Universe but has not finished including it in the index or mapping all of the backlinks.

I figure that it is time to start building doorway pages to further target different search terms for Digital Express. I decided to put the pages at tripod.com instead of angelfire. They're both owned by Lycos now but Tripod has more friendly subdomain urls. I created high-definition-satellite at tripod.com and got 8 pages up. I will try to get around 24 satellite tv sports pages up tomorrow.

Selling Directv & Dish Network Online - The Prequel

DigitalUniverse finally got indexed by Google. It was crawled on April,10 2007 at about 10:30pm. I still can't find it in the index by searching for the url so I'm back to waiting for a Google index update. I've got ten different sites up at either 741.com or 50 megs.com. After running a keyword density/prominence analysis on the urls I've found that they all seem to relate to fairly promising search terms so I decided to promote them all in different ways to see which,if any,of them actually generate any sales. I still haven't seen any sales so I need to do something besides work on web pages.

From building the computer to now has been about ten weeks. The building of the computer is a story in itself. It seems that sometime between the time that my ex girlfriend and I broke up and now everything has disappeared from my hard drive and the machine won't even power up. Probably her husband (LOL. Fat SOB shouldn't have ever introduced us.) He can have her back. I'm sick of her too.

Anyway, I went through all of my stuff in storage and had enough to resurrect the machine. With everything that I had on hand I had enough to do something really different. Instead of re-opening my home office with four computers on a LAN running different operating systems and software I decided to pack everything into one PC. One drive was to have WindowsXP on it with NTFS partitions. One drive was going to have Linux on it. I've been meaning to learn it for years. The third drive was going to have windows98 on it so that I could run the games and software that wouldn't run after I upgraded to Windows 2000/XP. My good friend Jim and I had talked about it for years. Finding out that he had been diagnosed with terminal kidney cancer and was dying made me go ahead and do it. Somehow my Win2000,Win98Se,WinMe & VMWare had mysteriously disappeared too. I had hundreds of dollars tied up in that stuff but I had enough software and hardware to get started. I scrounged up 768 megabytes of RAM and stuffed 512 into the box and got started.

It works really well in principle. When I cold boot the computer I press the delete key to go into CMOS setup. It's just a matter of changing the second boot device to whatever drive I want to boot from and saving the configuration. The PC will boot from that drive until the device is changed. The major snag was in installing operating systems on different drives. Windows want to own whatever it considers to be drive C: and every other partition in the system. Every time I would install an OS the partitions on the other two drives would become unbootable. I finally solved the problem by physically disconnecting the drives from the IDE controller and installing the OSes one at a time. Installing the apps was easy after that. I left a FAT32 partition on the back of each hard disk. The Win98 system can read/write the FAT32 partitions on the WinXP and Linux drives. WindowsXP can read/write the FAT/32 partitions on the Win98 and Linux Drives. If I could figure out how to mount the WinXp and Win98 drives I could read/write the partitions on those drives from Linux. This would make moving files from one OS to another easy. Enough about that. I still haven't made a dime.

I went to Juno.com to check out switching to their isp service and decided to post some classified ads. I really liked the ad site and started digging around. It turns out that the ad site,Topix.net is really a news site with classifieds and discussion groups. Checking further I find out that it is oned by Knight-Ridder,Tribune & Gannett. They own the biggest newspapers in the country. It looked like a good opportunity so I signed up to edit the news site for my hometown at Central News. I figured that I could promote the news site and make money with the classifieds and by posting an occasional press release about the sites. I read this morning that they are planning to become the classified ads provider for the online news sites of the three companies that own the majority shares. If this works out my ads could propagate to all kinds of places online and business can boom. I just need to have plenty of ads in place. I remembered that a recession is predicted for later this year so I decided to target low-unemployment areas to minimize the hit.

the new schedule has me posting 50-100 ads per day at topix sites and working on promoting the other sites with the search engines. Something needs to get going because the money for this is running out. I don't want to borrow to get going but I may have to just to keep everything moving forward until the search engines start to produce some traffic and sales. I designed a template for doorway pages targeting different search terms and a sitemap for them. I'll start working on that and promoting Digital Express tomorrow.

Directv & Dish Network

This is the first version of the website that I spent three years learning to be a satellite technician to build:

I found out very early in the satellite game that this business is very competitive. Every satellite dealer and rep is fiercely comptetitive. There is probably a Directv or Dish Network satellite retailer on every other street corner of every town in America. Everyone seems convinced that there is a lot of money to be made installing and servicing Dish Network and Directv satellite systems. It's not really true. The money is good. It's on par with computer programming or any other technical work. It involves a lot of physical work. If you don't mind crawling around under houses,working on ladders and in hot,stuffy attics then this may be the business for you.

I didn't get into the Directv and Dish Network Satellite business to be an installer or technician forever. Until I got my identity stolen I had sold goods and services online before. Since I live in the country I did not have access to cable tv so I had to get satellite tv. The first system that I had was called Primestar. I fell in love with it right away. Then Directv came along and bought them out. They came out and replaced my Primestar stuff with Directv. I hated for them to do it but they told me not to worry. They said that I would like it as much or more than the Primestar system. I insisted on keeping my Primestar remote. It controlled everything that I pointed it at. I still have it in a box somewhere.

The Directv installer was right. I did love my Directv satellite system as much or better than Primestar. I had bought the NFL Sunday Ticket football package. I was in football heaven. I could watch any NFL football game that I wanted. (That means that I could watch any Oakland Raider football game that I wanted). The Raiders won the AFC West division three years in a row,played in two AFC conference title games and went to one Super Bowl. I didn't miss much of it. I had the time of my life.

George Bush's presidency seemed to bring on the dot.com collapse and a recession that forced me out of business. To save money,my girlfriend and I lived together while I rented my place out. (Two very bad ideas). During tht time I got a Dish Network system so that we could watch different tv shows at the same time. After we broke up I moved back into my place and the Dish Network guy came to move my satellite system for me. After I talked with him I became interested in working in the satellite business. To make a long story short Iwound up becoming a satellite technician myself. I like the work and now I understand all the stuff that the satellite techs who installed my equipment had been talking about.

I wound up contracting to a very good local satellite retailer who I met totally by chance. After I learned enough about the satellite business I decided to come back online and set up a satellite site. As I've already said,the satellite business is very competitive. Not only did I find myslef competing with other Dish Network and Directv satellite retailers but I had to compete with cable companies for business too. Staying on the road selling and installing got to be very expensive. After losing two vans in one year to the road I decided to go back online and sell to try and cut operating expenses somewhat.

During the design of my site I definitely was setting up to sell Dish Network and Directv. Along the way I began to put together relationships with cable companies,cell phone companies and companies that sold cell phone accessories. It's now more of a digital services and devices site than a satellite televison site.

I originally put Digital Toy Box up at 741.com because they offered free hosting . I started getting complaints about the popup windows that 741.com insists on putting into their free sites. I didn't want to lose any business and I also wanted to make the website more friendly to 800*600 resolution visitors so I moved the operation. I left the original site in place.

The newer version of the site is now at 50megs.com and is called Digital Express. As planned, it is a lot friendlier to lower screen resolution visitors. It is a lot more streamlined and the code size is smaller. I managed to lose over 10k of page code in the transition. Somewhere along the way I wound up with 10 test websites at both 741.com and 50megs.com. This is where it starts to get interesting.....
